Comments: The Norris was commissioned on June 9, 1947, MY BIRTHDAY.
I was assigned to her from nuclear power school. I had been busted from an E5 to an E3, for being 11 minutes late for quarters one morning at Prototype School and given a demonstrated unreliability drop from their program..The Norris was chosen from my birthdate as my next duty station. I walked aboard her and saluted the OOD and caught the ships commission date from the ships placque...just about died..thought to myself, boy , I'll die on this ship...but of course I didn't ...I met a lot of good guys on board and had quite an experience...That's where I learned you make the best of all situations..

Comments: I loved my time aboard the Norris, and had a fierce loyalty to her, and joined her boxing team, where we earned the name "carrier killers" (fights were held on the hanger decks) where we fought. Because there wasen't room on the decks of a destroyer! I extended my time of duty to make a med. cruise with her, leaving after that deployment. But the people, and the ship never left my mind or heart! It was one of the best time's in my life!

Comments: I ran the sonar gang and made two med cruises until a crazy radioman and another guy who Section 8'ed accused me of being a homosexual. There was an investigation, they checked my locker for gay pictures (I guess) and several of us were called before the officers in the wardroom. Captain Piatek grilled me, but I called his bluff. Nothing came of it, except I asked for a transfer. I went to the Dickson, also in Newport. It was a hard thing to go through

Comments: I rose from HN2 to Ensign in a little over 1 yr. Then I was sent to the USS Norris under Capt. Robert Massimee, who hated my guts. (I think that he disliked anyone who was taller than he.) He made my entire time on that ship a miserable experience. I'll admit that I was young and more or less immature. Fortunately I was in the best physical shape of my life -- I had moved furniture with Allied Van Lines two summers before entering the Navy, and also worked with my Dad on construction of a local school just before entering the Navy. Also, I had just completed two boot camps (Enlisted and Officer School) the previous year, so mentally I was extremely hardened.
If you're still alive, Capt. Massimee, I'd like you to know that you made me even tougher after having served under you. For this, I suppose I should be grateful. That experience steeled me and gave me the stubbornness and determination to obtain my M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Microbiology. I went on to become a successful Research Scientist.

Comments: Great times and many days off the Cuban coast ???? Rember the storm, and the Capt. with the pet snake?? My nick name was "Hound Dog", do any of you remember the storm in 62 that split the front of the ship open during the Cuban blockade ?? Rember the Russions sitting on the missiles on their ships?? I came to the Norris from the U.S.S. Gurke DD783 out of San Diago.

Comments: While the ship was in Boston in April 1962, I was on two weeks leave in Jax, Fla, and my wife went into labor the night before my leave was up. Called the ship to ask for an extention, but was denied. Upon being told I made YN3, I jumped on a plane the next day, but missed the ship when it pulled out for Newport. I took a "cab" from Boston to Newport, and when I got to the pier, I saw the "859" heading out to sea. By some luck another ship from the Squadron was just getting underway, and I made it aboard and was highlined to the "Norris" the next day.

Comments: good times, hard times, boreing times. We built a washing machine, blew a 25 knot valve and repaired it under way. DIW in the Black Sea with a russian cruiser watching. sailed with the USS. Kennedy. drank a lot of beer, had a lot of fun. All in all not a bad experience
