Memories from the 2 ships are starting to blur together, but I clearly remember the oil drum washing machine, losing fires on my watch in the Black Sea and how many short timers we had coming back from the '69 Med cruise.Well done website.

Comments: My brother, Larry (FN) now deceased, and I boarded the ship the day before we left for Viet Nam. I was seasick for about 11/2 months. I started in First Div. until we came back from Viet Nam and then went into suppoly. I also ran the ship's athletic program only because I played alot of sports. Our football team won the Boston Shipbaord league, tounament, then went to Portsmouth and won the First Naval District Tournament (first time by a destroyer), then went on to Norfolk but lost to base teams. Would like to hear from old shipmates.

Comments: What a great site! The Norris was my first (and best) ship - I reported from ET school having never seen a Navy ship. Both the ship and Newport made a big impression. My first job on board was to reassemble the radar scope laying in pieces on the bridge. We needed a crypto tech for the '66 NAM cruise so I was sent to school in Norfolk and had to catch the Norris half-way there. I did a lot of growing up on that ship. Transferred to the USS Sperry in May '67 because I couldn't see spending my last year in Boston shipyard. I went back to college when I got out in April '68 and got a EE degree. A professor sent me to interview at the Naval Research Lab and I've been working on crypto and other security systems since then. Give me a shout, especially if you find yourself near Washington, DC.

I was transfered to Philadelphia to a reserve training ship, the USS Barton, and then back to Viet Nam for a second tour on the USS Lowry DD 770 out of Norfolk. Comments: I arrived on the Norris at Newport Rhode Island after ET-A school at Great Lakes as an E-2 seaman apprentice. After numerous cruises up and down the east coast, we entered the Boston Naval Shipyard for a six month re-fit, followed by three months in refresher training at 'Gitmo.' The 'Gitmo' experience was one of the toughest times of my life because by day we played war games and by night we had to fix all the stuff the 'yard' left undone. Our 'inop' report was about three and a-half pages and Chief Gerry Mead was pulling his hair out. We then made a Med cruise and operated with the carrier Independence doing a lot of plane guarding and usual destroyer grunt work. On the return trip I came down with cancer, but didn't know what it was at the time. I went home for a few days upon arriving at Newport and went to sick call at the St. Albans Naval Hospital in New York where I remained for about seven months after four operations and extensive chemotherapy. Served under Cheif Silva, Cheif Fisher and Lt. Lutz, B Div. Made BT3 during active duty & BT2 active reserves. For those who like to know: Currently married to same spouse for 351/2 yrs, we have two daughters & a son. I have worked 36 years with Edward Valves/Anchor-Darling Valves. Hold position of "Research - Development Engineer", Flowserve Corp., Raleigh N.C., facility. Plan to retire soon and start my own Heating & Air Condition Co., currently attending night classes in HVAC to obtain my license. I keep myself active but try not to over do it.
